7 Tips for Creating Content at Home

When it comes to marketing your business and engaging with customers, content is crucial. Regularly sharing quality content can help you provide value to your audience, grow brand awareness, and start conversations with current and potential customers.

What’s a person to do when they’re stuck at home? While it may seem more difficult to create content these days, don’t throw your content strategy out the window! It’s still important to show up for your audience, you just have to get a little creative.

Here are seven tips for creating content at home:

Don’t stress about perfection

Before you start creating content at home, remember that “perfect” is not the goal. It can be easy to get caught up in comparing your content to the content you see from other brands, but don’t spend so much time trying to be perfect that you miss out on engaging with your audience and building relationships.

The goal is to create content that’s going to resonate with your followers. Yes, this should still be quality content, but instead of stressing out about creating “perfect” content, focus on creating content that addresses your audience’s pain points, provides helpful information, entertains them, and inspires them to take action.

It’s ok if you don’t have access to a professional photographer, videographer or studio. Do what you can with what you have available. Get creative, get out of your comfort zone, and focus on helping your audience.

And remember – perfect doesn’t exist anyway!

Do an at-home photoshoot

While having professional photos of your products is definitely important, not every photo you share online needs to be professionally taken. Snapping some quality pictures during an at-home photoshoot is absolutely possible!

First, do some research so you have an understanding of the basics of photography. This will help you get a great shot. For example, use the gridlines feature when taking photos to help with composition, and try to find some natural lighting.

Look for spots in your home that would make a good background for your photos. Consider places like your backyard, front porch, bathroom, or fireplace. Use items you have handy as props, such as books, candles, plants and more. If you want to include yourself in the photos, try using a tripod and a timer or wireless remote.

Test out different locations, angles and more, and see what works best for you. Just remember to keep everything on brand!

Give a behind-the-scenes look

Working from home may not seem like a very interesting thing to talk about or show your audience, but it’s actually a great opportunity to share some behind-the-scenes content. This helps your audience get to know you and your brand on a more personal level and helps you stay authentic.

Not sure what to share? Talk about what you do for your business during a typical day! Planning some new products? Hop on a live video to talk about some of the exciting things you have coming up or share what your process looks like. Packaging products to mail to customers? Take some photos and talk about how excited you are for people to try your products. Take photos or videos that show how your products are made or how to use them. Try looking at your day from an outsider’s perspective and see what people might find interesting.

Create graphics

Add some variety to the photos and videos on your social media page by creating graphics. The good news is you don’t need to be a professional graphic designer; there are plenty of graphic design apps available for free, such as Canva, that make it easy to create fun, quality graphics. You can choose from a variety of templates and customize it with your own text and other elements, or create a graphic entirely from scratch if you’re feeling up to it.

What kind of graphics should you make? Consider inspirational quotes, helpful tips, or a catchy headline that leads to a story in the caption. Using your brand colors in the image is a great way to keep it visually on brand.

Write blog posts

Blog posts are a great way to share information about your business and industry. What pain points do your audience members have, or what questions do they regularly ask you? Write a blog post that addresses these issues and offer a helpful solution! Or, provide valuable insights into your industry, or talk about a company value. Blogging is a great way to not only provide helpful information, but to engage with your audience and position yourself as a subject matter expert in your field, as well.

Blogging can also help drive people to your website. Take some time to research and incorporate keywords and search engine optimization best practices to improve your Google results ranking, and be sure to share your blog posts to social media!

Ask for user-generated content

User-generated content, or UGC, is content created by your audience that includes your products. Sharing UGC is a great way to show proof that people buy and love your products (which encourages others to do the same) as well as show appreciation for your customers. UGC also helps grow brand awareness and build trust.

Ask your audience to share photos with their favorite products of yours and tag your brand or use a specific hashtag when posting. This will help make sure you see the content when a customer posts it.

Working with influencers is another way to generate UGC. While this will usually require you to pay the influencer, working with the right person can help you get your brand and products in front of your target audience.

Work with a digital marketing agency

While creating content from home is definitely doable, we understand that it can be a time-consuming process. If you have too much on your plate or just don’t feel like doing all the work, consider outsourcing to a digital marketing agency. Agencies are able to help with a variety of content-related tasks, including taking photos, writing captions and blog posts, creating graphics and managing social media.
